Mets re-sign Tatis

The New York Mets have re-signed OF Fernando Tatis

Tatis, the NL Comeback Player of the Year, was a nice surprise for the Mets in 2008. Hopefully he’s being looked at to provide some depth as a right-handed bat off the bench, rather than a starting player – but I’m happy he’s coming back next year.

(I had hoped to have a Mets card to use the next time I wrote about Tatis — Topps cooperated by including him in the 2008 Updates & Highlights set, but I haven’t gotten a copy yet.)

In other Mets-related news, LHP Oliver Perez, 2B Damion Easley and RHP Matt Wise filed for free agency.

I’d like to see Perez come back, but he’s probably headed elsewhere thanks to his expected contract demands. (I wonder if, considering the overall economy, that players might realize that they can’t have the big paydays that their agents have been leading them to expect. Nah, they’ll probably just start crying “collusion” instead.)

The Mets could do worse than Damion Easley for a role-player for their bench. On the other hand, the team needs to get younger. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back, but I won’t be heartbroken if they go in another direction.

As for Matt Wise, I barely remember that he was ever part of the team. It won’t be hard to say goodbye.
