Catcher Hobie Landrith was the New York Mets’ first pick in the 1961 expansion draft. Manager Casey Stengel explained the choice by saying, “You gotta have a catcher or you’re gonna have a lot of passed balls.”
Landrith, who had been a backup for most of his career, played well for the Mets… maybe a little too well. In 23 games, he batted .289 with a home run and seven RBI. In early June, New York sent Landrith to the Baltimore Orioles to complete an earlier trade that brought “Marvelous” Marv Throneberry to the Mets.
Landrith signed this card through the mail in exchange for a small donation.
