Most baseball fans remember Jose Oquendo as a super utility player for the St. Louis Cardinals. (In 1988, Oquendo played at least one inning at each of the nine defensive positions.)

Oquendo began his career with the New York Mets in 1983 at the age of 19. He never really hit in New York, so the Mets sent him to St. Louis in a low-profile swap at the tail end of spring training in 1985.

Oquendo was never a big star, but he was a solid player for most of his ten years in St. Louis. His best season was 1989, when he hit .291 while playing in a league-leading 163 games.

After his playing career ended, Oquendo became a coach for St. Louis. He is currently under consideration for the Seattle Mariners managing vacancy.
