Bill Hepler was a pitcher for the 1966 New York Mets. He went 3-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 37 appearances, mostly in relief. His Major League debut was on April 23, and his final big league appearance was on Oct. 2.
I admit to a certain degree of curiousity about why Mr. Hepler played his final Major League baseball game just days after his 21st birthday, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to ask when I wrote to him to ask him to sign this card.
Hepler would have been 20, or at worst 19 when the photo used on this card was taken. When I look at it, I see a kid who should be playing high school ball. He makes the game look fun, though, doesn’t he?
