Turk Wendell spent parts of 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, including five each with the Mets and Cubs. While Wendell was a successful reliever in New York, I remember him more for all of his unusual quirks than I do for his pitching.
- Though he doesn’t have it on in this photo, Wendell wore a necklace made from the teeth and claws of various animals that he hunted.
- Like Oliver Perez, Wendell wouldn’t step over the baseline when he came on or off the field.
- Wendell would brush his teeth in the dugout after each inning that he pitched.
I’m sure that I’m forgetting some others; Wendell was a very entertaining player.
I’m nearing the end of the lot of 8×10 photos I bought last week, but I still have one more left for tomorrow.
turk was one of my favorite old mets! I remember all of his unusual quirks like the necklace! hahha

I’m a little disappointed that Wendell’s not wearing the teeth & claws necklace in the photo… it’s the first thing I think of with him.
