Happy Earth Day and/or Easter weekend!
The Mets finally broke their Citi Field losing streak last night and look to continue their success against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at 7:10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s games will be 1:10 p.m. afternoon starts, weather permitting. After a day off Monday, the Mets will head to Washington for a mid-week series against the Nationals
I have plans to go to Saturday’s game, but I may skip it if the weather looks too soggy. (On the bright side, I’m sitting up high enough that I may get some protection from the catwalk used to service the light installations.)
The Trenton Thunder are on the road this week, with series in Harrisburg and Richmond.
The Lakewood Blue Claws are finishing a series with the Ashville Tourists this weekend before returning home to play the New York Yankees’ South Atlantic League affiliate, the Charleston River Dogs, in a five-game series this week. Most games start at 6:35 p.m., but Wednesday is an 11:05 day game and Friday is a 7:05 p.m. start to accommodate a post-game fireworks show. The first 2000 kids attending Wednesday’s game will get over-sized baseball cards.
Throughout next week’s homestand, the Blue Claws will be collecting food donations as part of the Strike Out Hunger drive. Fans who bring a non-perishable food item will receive a voucher for a Blue Claws ticket to a Monday-Wednesday game in May or June.
The Somerset Patriots will wrap up their spring training, with an exhibition game against Camden on Tuesday and open workouts Saturday-Monday. See their website for details.
Two new baseball card products are due to ship next week: Topps Gypsy Queen and Topps Attax. I’ve little interest in the latest installment of the Topps baseball card game, but I’m curious to see the reaction to the Gypsy Queen cards once they find their way into collectors’ hands. I’m probably going to pass on both, since I still have to finish my 2011 Topps Heritage Mets team set and my budget is not unlimited.
It’s a light weekend for baseball card shows, with a mall show at the Vorhees town center tonight and tomorrow, and one at the Parsippany P.A.L. on Tuesday. Check out the Beckett Card Show Calendar for details (or shows in other states)
