Link: If Baseball Had Robots

If you owned the Nintendo Entertainment System way back when, maybe you remember a game called “Base Wars.” Patrick Dubuque of NotGraphs certainly does, and I want to thank him for reminding me of one of my favorite NES video games.

As the name sort of implies, Base Wars combined the game of baseball with gladiatorial combat. Since the game was set in the 24th century, the players were all robots.

I spent many hours playing Base Wars, but I don’t think too many of my games reached the scheduled 9-inning conclusion. There were no umpires in the future; all close plays were settled through combat. If the runner won, he took the base. If the defender won, well, the runner was relegated to the scrap heap. And once a team lost too many players, the game was finished.

I kinda wish I could play Base Wars again, cheesy graphics & all. 🙂

  1. I so remember that game. It was one of my all time favorite games for NES ( there was another game i think it was called backyard superstars softball or something along that lines ) I to dont remember if I ever finished a full 9 inning game. Brings back some good memories.

  2. Base Wars was fun for awhile, but once you learned how to use the Battle Gimmick, all combat was a foregone conclusion, and it didn’t take long just to destroy enough of the opposing team to win easily. That, and all the home runs got tiresome after about the 6th in a row. It was a great idea for a game, it just needed a little more work. I’m surprised they never brought it back!
