High grade Honus Wagner card hits auction block in February

One of the most famous baseball cards — a 1909 T206 Honus Wagner — is hitting the auction block next month. This copy, one of only three graded EX 5 by PSA, is the centerpiece of Goldin Auctions‘ February auction.

“With less that 60 authenticated Wagner cards out there, the opportunity to purchase one does not come around very often… It is easily the most famous of all trading cards and the ultimate addition to any collection,” said company founder Ken Goldin in a press release. “The fact that this Wagner carries a grade of EX 5 by PSA puts it in a class with just two others that have ever been graded. The day has arrived for someone new to lay claim to this investment grade piece of baseball and American history.”

In 2008, this card sold for $1.62 million. Last year, another T206 Wagner in lesser condition, graded VG 3 sold for over $1.2 million.

How much do you think this Honus Wagner card will sell for? If you had a couple million to invest in sports memorabilia, would you target this baseball card or would you look for something else?

  1. A little outside my price range, I’m afraid. I’ve always been partial to the T205 gold borders anyway.

Now, if I could just get my hands on a Post Hot Rod Kanehl, THAT would interest me far more.
