Is anyone really surprised that Michael Bourn won’t be a Met this year?
Sandy Alderson apparently did make a competitive offer to the 30-year-old free agent, but he had to realize that Bourn and his agent Scott Boras weren’t going to wait around for a couple of weeks to see if the Mets’ 11th overall pick in the first-year player draft would be protected.
I’m not disappointed – I thought the whole thing was a smoke and mirrors show designed to fool fans and Mets players into thinking that Alderson cared how the 2013 team finishes. I’m not even convinced that Bourn was going to contribute enough to keep the Mets out of last place this year if he did sign.
I’d just like to know, if Zack Wheeler, Travis d’Arnaud, etc. develop like Alderson hopes they will – are the Mets going to be able to sign “overpriced” free agents to improve the team next winter? And will Alderson actually be willing to part with the money if his bosses have it to spend?
