I would have enjoyed spending part of this spring in Port St. Lucie, Fla., but for various reasons that just isn’t possible.
I got a couple of autographs from players in Mets camp anyway on Tuesday. I wrote to almost a dozen players a couple of weeks ago, ones who were new to the organization or who just got their first Mets baseball cards at the end of last season. Today, the first signed cards came back.

Prior to 2012, Josh Edgin had never pitched above the Single-A level. Last year, he jumped from Double-A all the way to the major leagues and enjoyed some mixed results with the Mets. He’s considered a favorite to win a spot in the big league bullpen this year.

Anthony Recker arrived in the Mets organization via a waiver claim from the Chicago Cubs last October. Recker played in a handful of games for both Chicago and Oakland last year, but he spent most of the season in Triple-A. He’s got a good chance to win the backup catcher job for the Mets this year.
Thanks for making my day a little brighter guys.
Edgin almost looks like David wethers, nice pick up

Paul, I had the pleasure of visiting Florida for the first time ever with my wife and kids. It was primarily a Disney trip, but I squeezed in side trips to the Braves’ and Mets’ spring training camps.
I got plenty of autographs at both camps–primarily coaches, pitchers and catchers. I also had plenty of congenial company in the autograph hunting department. It all generally went well. I got numerous prospects and rising stars, but I missed several Braves’ coaches for whom I had cards (R. McDowell, Pendleton) while getting squashed, and waiting in vain, for New Jersey native Jason Heyward.
At Port St. Lucie, I got autographs from Mets “A to Z”—Original Met Al Jackson to Zach Wheeler. I missed David Wright, though—others said he drove off after his pre-camp physical, waving, to get to the bowling alley for the team bonding session this past Sunday.
As far as facilities, the Braves’ camp in Kissimmee within the Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports puts Tradition Field in St. Lucie, and maybe all other Grapefruit League stadia to shame. A minor quibble, though. It was fun for all!

Thanks for sharing – sorry to hear that you missed out on Jason Heyward, Roger McDowell and David Wright, but congratulations on your successes. I’m glad you had a good time.
I wonder where Thomas J. White Stadium / Tradition Field / Digital Domain Park / Tradition Field ranks in terms of age of spring training complexes still in active use. I think it’s got to be up there among the oldest.
