Newark Bears outfielder Jamar Walton and pitcher Leondy Perez were named this week’s Can-Am League Pointstreak Batter and Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Walton went 10-for-22 with a pair of three-hit games and had 10 RBI during the week, while Perez picked up two wins and struck out 15 in 13 innings.
Through 19 games, the Bears are 10-9. They’ve got a four-game winning streak and trail first-place Quebec by three games. While attendance continues to be an issue for Newark, they are off to a better start than they’ve had in recent years. Maybe this year, they’ll be able to compete for a league championship.
And did anybody actually see that? Do we know it really happened? After all, the Bears are averaging 400-something so far this season.

I’ve been to two games. They had a good (for the Bears) crowd on opening night, and what looked like a couple hundred on a dreary Monday night after it rained most of the morning.
I don’t see how the math works for a pro team to average under 500 fans per game, but maybe things will improve if the weather ever does. I’ll let the team’s owners worry about that and just try to enjoy the games when I do go.
