Juan Centeno became the 967th player in New York Mets history on Wednesday night when he made his major league debut in a game that will probably be remembered more for Ruben Tejada’s broken leg than the Mets’ come-from-behind victory.
Centeno got his first major league hit off of San Francisco starter Matt Cain and went 2-for-4 on the night. His second hit came during the ninth-inning rally, driving in a run.
The Mets selected Centeno in the 32nd round of the 2007 draft, and he has spent the last seven seasons in the minor leagues. He’s thought of primarily as a defensive catcher – while Centeno has a respectable career minor league batting average of .274, he has just 39 doubles, 8 triples and 2 home runs in 316 games.
I got my 2009 Brooklyn Cyclones team set card signed in 2010 before a Trenton Thunder, when Centeno was briefly assigned to the Binghamton Mets
