It’s been a bit of a strange week, so I’m just getting around to putting something up about Opening Day.
I wasn’t planning to go this year, but one of my friends invited me and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity. When I woke up to snow flurries, I wondered if I’d made a good choice.
I’m glad I went. Sure, the weather wasn’t ideal… but the sun was shining by game time, and it wasn’t that cold compared to what we endured back in January. After the winter that didn’t want to end, who wouldn’t want to be out at the ballpark watching a baseball game?
For most of the day, it looked like the Mets would win their 35th Opening Day victory thanks in large part to players who weren’t originally supposed to be a part of the lineup. It didn’t quite work out that way, but at least there was excitement until the very end.
The 2014 New York Mets are what they are… a team with some talent, but not enough to win 90 games this year. Sandy Alderson and his lieutenants need to get the team to the point where 90 wins is a realistic goal, not a punchline. But I’m not going to let that get in the way of my enjoyment of the handful of Mets games I’ll be able to go to this year.
