Utility man and pinch runner Eric Young Jr. has signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers that includes an invitation to their spring training camp.
Young, 30, appeared in 18 games for the Mets in September, mainly as a pinch runner. He stole three bases in five attempts and scored nine runs, but was hitless in nine plate appearances.
During a previous stint with the Mets in 2013 and 2014, Young was a mainstay at the the top of the batting order due to Terry Collins‘ fondness for his speed (and disregard for Young’s low on base percentage.)
While ill-suited for that role, Young’s speed added excitement to the game when he did reach base. He was also one of the more fan-friendly players during his time at Citi Field, often stopping to acknowledge fans and sign autographs after batting practice, and responding to fan mail autograph requests.
If Young makes the Brewers’ major league roster, he and his father will become the third father-son duo to play for Milwaukee, joining Tito and Terry Francona, and Davey and Derrick May.
Here’s hoping for success for Young… at least when the Brewers are not playing the Mets.
