The Somerset Patriots have named Glen Barker as their hitting coach and third base coach for the 2016 season.
Barker, who played for the Houston Astros from 1999-2001, replaces Shane Spencer, who will be coaching in South Korea this year.
“Having played at all levels of the game, it helps as a coach to tell the players ‘look I’ve been in this situation before.’ It’s a game of failures that you have to learn how to work through to get better. Seeing it from a player’s perspective always helps,” Barker said in a team press release.
If you’ve got a really good memory, you might recall that Barker played in three games for the 2003 Patriots and still holds a share of the team record for most triples in one game (two.)
The Patriots will also be holding a clothing drive on Saturday, January 30th from 10 a.m. – noon at the team store at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater. Bring coats, sweatshirts, gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters, etc. to donate to the Salvation Army of New Brunswick.
There will be hot chocolate and doughnuts, and team mascot Sparkee and infielder Scott Kelly will meet fans and sign autographs.
