Mets Baseball Card of the Week: 2008 Topps Year in Review Julio Franco #YR34

Julio-Franco-2008-Topps-Yea

Julio-Franco-2008-backIn 2008, Topps included a 178-card “Year In Review” insert set across the series of their base set release, highlighting milestones – major and minor – of the 2007 Major League Baseball season.

Julio Franco was included on card #YR34, recognizing him for becoming the oldest Major League player to hit a home run at 48 years, eight months,  and 12 days of age.

Looking back, I’m not sure what amazes me more: that Franco played in the Major Leagues until his 49th birthday, or that he was able to succeed at all with this unorthodox batting stance.

Twelve other cards in the insert set feature Mets players, according to Beckett Media’s database:

  • YR1 Paul LoDuca
  • YR4 Carlos Beltran
  • YR6 Jose Reyes
  • YR34 Julio Franco
  • YR53 Oliver Perez
  • YR59 Carlos Delgado
  • YR76 Julio Franco
  • YR102 Jose Reyes
  • YR126 Tom Glavine
  • YR128 Billy Wagner
  • YR152 Tom Glavine
  • YR153 Pedro Martinez
  • YR176 Moises Alou

As always, please note that this baseball card has standard, squared corners. If you are seeing it with rounded corners, it is because of the way my blog’s theme displays photos.
