Fan input sought on new New Britain team's name

The New Britain (Conn.) Herald is running a “Name the Team” contest for New Britain’s new Atlantic League franchise, which will have no connection to the recently folded Camden Riversharks.

More than 1,000 people submitted potential names for the new team. The five finalists are:

  • Stingers
  • Hornets
  • Hard Hitters
  • Hammer
  • Bees

You can vote for your favorite at the newspaper’s home page, newbritainherald.com. The Atlantic League will make a final determination on the new team’s name based on input from the public, but the newspaper contest results are not binding.

New Britain’s Atlantic League franchise will begin play in 2016 at New Britain Stadium, which had been home to the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats since it opened in 1996. The Colorado Rockies-affiliated team is relocating to Hartford, Conn. next year and will play as the Yard Goats going forward.

The minor league affiliation shuffle

BaseballWe’re in the middle of the annual period where minor league baseball teams can change which major league organization they are affiliated with if their agreements have expired. This year, there seems to be a bit more activity than usual.

You can read Josh Levanthal‘s rundown of all the changes at Baseball America, but I’m just going highlight the changes that might be of interest to us in the New Jersey area.

  • The Colorado Rockies signed a two-year Player Development with the New Britain (Conn.) Rock Cats of the Double-A Eastern League. New Britain had been affiliated with the Minnesota Twins for the past 20 years. The Rockies had their original Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League, the New Haven Ravens, from 1994-98. (New Britain visits Trenton for a four-game series Aug. 31 – Sept. 3, 2015)
  • While not technically an affiliation shift, the New York Yankees will field a team in Pulaski, Va. next season that replaces the Seattle Mariners’ Appalachian League Rookie-level team. The Mariners organization decided not to continue to operate a team in that league after this season.

2010 New Britain Rock Cats Checklist Question

Ok, here’s an off-topic question. Does anybody know where I can find a checklist for the 2010 New Britain Rock Cats team set?

I was given  a partial set – I’ve got 31 of 32 cards. They are unnumbered and there is no checklist, so I’m not sure who I’m missing.

The team website isn’t very helpful, and while one eBay seller includes a card list – it’s not very accurate. One player is listed twice and it’s missing a couple of the cards that I actually have.
