In 2005, we were all excited about the New York Mets. Our new GM Omar Minaya got us Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran — two of the biggest stars on the market that winter. The team’s marketing slogan was “Next Year Is Now” and it seemed like it might actually be true.
History shows that the picture wasn’t quite as rosy as we wanted to believe, but that sense of optimism produced some interesting collectibles.
The New York Times created a series of 25 commemorative pins, which featured everyone from stars like Mike Piazza, Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and David Wright to lesser-known and less popular players like Victor Diaz, Victor Zambrano and Kris Benson. The Mets logo, Mr. Met and Shea Stadium also had pins.
