Autograph of the Week: Rodney Peete

With the sports world obsessed with football’s “big game” this weekend, it seemed appropriate to show off an autographed football card.

Rodney Peete is best known to sports fans for his 15-year NFL career, but he was a two-sport star in high school and college. Three major league teams drafted Peete: the Toronto Blue Jays in 1984, Oakland Athletics in 1988 and 1989, and the Detroit Tigers in 1990. He did not sign, and instead pursued a football career.

Of note for people of a certain age, Peete married actress Holly Robinson, who co-starred in 21 Jump Street.

Pro Line, a short-lived football card set put out by NFL Properties at the height of the sports card boom in the early 1990s, included nine-card “Profiles” subset focusing on Peete in 1992. Certified autograph versions exist for all of the cards, but they are signed on the back.

Mine features a signature that was likely obtained through the mail and I’m really not familiar enough with Peete’s autograph to say whether it is authentic. I acquired it as a throw-in in a larger purchase from a local sports card dealer last year,
