Former Mets and Yankees outfielder Shane Spencer will not return as the Somerset Patriots’ third base coach and hitting instructor in 2016.

Spencer has accepted the position of field coordinator and manager for the Nexen Heroes’ minor league system in South Korea.

“I want to thank the Somerset Patriots organization for a wonderful time while I was coaching there. I was sad to say that I was leaving for a coaching position in Korea, but it is an opportunity that I just couldn’t pass up,” Spencer said in a team press release.

Tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 12th, baseball fans can take a look at the way baseball was played in the 19th century and get autographs from Somerset Patriots players and coaches at the team’s annual Fan Fest at TD Bank Ballpark.

The event, which will be held from noon-3 p.m., will feature a game between the Flemington Neshanock and the Elizabeth Resolutes played using 1864 rules. The two teams are members of the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League.

Somerset Patriots manager emeritus Sparky Lyle, manager Brett Jodie, hitting coach Shane Spencer and select team players will also be on hand to sign autograph at various times during the event.

Fans will be able to tour the ballpark and take advantage of ticket specials, and there will be a variety of children’s activities.

Lance Burkhart will become the third manager in Southern Maryland Blue Crabs franchise history this season, the team announced today. The 39-year-old former catcher had served as the hitting coach for the Lancaster Barnstormers for the last four years.

Burkhart replaces Patrick Osborn, who left the Blue Crabs to manage one of the New York Yankees’ two affiliates in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

Meanwhile, the Sugarland Skeeters announced that manager Gary Gaetti has agreed to a three-year contract extension. A two-time Major League Baseball All-Star, Gaetti has been the manager of the Skeeters since they entered the Atlantic League in 2012.

In other news, the Somerset Patriots announced that hitting coach Shane Spencer and pitching coach Cory Domel will return for the 2014 season yesterday.

I remember Burkhart and Osborn from their playing days, and I’m happy to see them get a chance to move forward in their coaching careers.

And maybe this year, I’ll finally have a chance to get Shane Spencer’s autograph.

Shane Spencer hired by Somerset Patriots

The Somerset Patriots have hired former New York Yankees and New York Mets outfielder Shane Spencer to be their hitting and third base coach.

“Shane brings a wealth of knowledge to our staff.  His experiences as a player and coach will be extremely valuable in helping us produce a championship caliber team.  I very much look forward to working with him towards our common goal,” Patriots Manager Brett Jodie said in a team press release.

“I’ve done the hitting coach job in the (affiliated) minor-leagues and I was looking for something different,” Spencer told Ryan Dunleavy, who covers the team for MyCentralJersey.com

Spencer played five seasons with the New York Yankees, making his debut in 1998. He spent one year each with Cleveland and Texas before finishing his major league career with the New York Mets in 2004. Spencer then went to Japan, where he played for the Hanshin Tigers in 2005 and 2006. He was a hitting coach for the San Diego Padres organization at the Single-A level in 2008 and 2009.

Dunleavy writes that Spencer plans to use the ups and downs of his career — on-field and off- — as a teaching tool.

I got a Shane Spencer baseball card signed through the mail a few years ago, but if I get the opportunity to see the Patriots this year I’ll probably try to see if I can get one signed in person.

Do you plan to see the Somerset Patriots or any other Atlantic League baseball games this year?
