Happy St. Patrick’s Day if you celebrate it, and happy Monday to everyone else. By the end of this week, the 2014 Major League Baseball season will be officially underway.
Here are a few interesting articles that you might have missed:
- Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt is recovering from an advanced form of skin cancer and talked about it publicly for the first time this weekend. I wish him well – Schmidt was one of my late father’s favorite baseball players.
- Baseball America‘s Matt Eddy examined the numerical advantage of having left-handed pitchers available to face left-handed hitters. I’m still not a fan of baseball’s seven- and 8-man bullpens, but I have a better understanding of why roster construction has changed in that direction.
- Reuters profiled Japanese pitching coach Yoshinori Sato, who worked with both Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka earlier during their careers.
Finally, going off-topic, Bleeding Cool’s Brendon Connelly interviewed Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas about his film that opened this weekend. (Warning – there are spoilers.) If you are a fan of the series, you owe it to yourself to see the film if you haven’t already.
